Rakhovo

RAKHOVO: This prison camp held both prisoners of war and civilian internees during World War I. The Bulgarians established this facility in northwestern Bulgaria, on the southern bank of the Danube, across the border from Romania. The Bulgarian Army incarcerated 1,800 Romanian, Russian, and Italian prisoners, as well as civilians at Rakhovo. Christian Phildius visited Rakhovo in the Fall of 1916 and the Association constructed a YMCA hut for WPA programs.
