Remains from factory towns in coastal Andhra: The Collector's Residence

The Collector's Residence in the chief city of each administrative division (a district) was an imposing edifice, particularly in relation to the buildings that surrounded it. The only comparable structure in a given area might be the zamindar's house or the local rajah's palace. The residence pictured here is from Machilipatnam, the capital of the Krishna District. It is a large house set in an enormous lot on the edge of the city. The collector's office, the Collectorate, in this case is 100 yards up the road.
