1Just fifteen days before this manuscript went to press, the Digger Archives Web site www.diggers.org, a critical source for this project, was orphaned by the collapse of its Web host service. It will take some time for the site archivist to reconstitute this valuable resource. He has decided to redesign the site as he reconstitutes it, so some of the documents cited in this work are not available as of the date of this publication. When a document is available (either in the reconstituted site or in cached copies of the Archives located elsewhere on the Web), I provide an active hyperlink in the notes. When I have been unable to locate another source, I provide the URL of its last known location in boldface. The Web is a dynamic environment, so I urge readers to search for the documents cited in inactive links; they may again become available.

2Readers will also note that from time to time, in both text and notes, I have inserted courtesy links to relevant Web pages, available online as of this writing. These courtesy links are not substitutes for citation, and may or may not point to a source or edition cited in the notes; frequently, they point to transcriptions of documents by the hosting entity, rather than facsimiles. When determining what sources I have consulted in reaching the conclusions stated in my text, rely on the notes, not the courtesy links, as the ultimate authority.
