Formed in December, 1940, the 97th Light Infantry (Jäger) Division consisted of the 204th and 207th Infantry Regiments and the usual regiment of artillery and battalions of reconnaissance, antitank, engineer and signal troops. It invaded Russia as part of Army Group South and fought in the Ukraine and Donetz Basin campaigns. It entered the Caucasus in 1942, retreating in 1943. It fought well in the retreats in the southern front, but was routed in March 1944, finishing the war in the Prague sector.
