Formed by Army Group Center on March 15, 1941, the 286th Security Division had an unusual strength of three security regiments, 31st , 61st and 122nd, with the usual companies of fusiliers, antitank, engineer and signal troops. It conducted antipartisan and zone security operations until being thrown into front line action against the 1944 Summer Offensive. Reformed in reduced strength in Germany during July-August, it continued to serve in Poland and East Prussia, was redesignated an infantry division on December 29 and disbanded in February, 1945.
