The 6th SS "Nord" Mountain Division became a division in April, 1940, consisting of the 11th and 12th SS Mountain Regiments, plus the usual artillery regiment and battalions of reconnaissance, antitank, antiaircraft, engineer and signal troops. Sent to Finland, it operated with the German 20th Army in the failed drive against Murmansk. Notoriously unreliable in action there, it fell back in the general retreat of 1944, reappearing in the Western Front at the end of the in the abortive Colmar Offensive in Alsace, after which it was destroyed in April, 1945.
